Understanding Profit & Loss Calculation

P/L in general is the amount of money you make or lose from selling an asset. The amount difference between your Buy Value and your Sell Value is then marked as Profit or Loss.

  • If you sell at a higher price than your buy price, then it will become a profit.
  • If you sell at a lower price than your buy price, then it will become a loss.

At one point of time, the total P/L will consist of the total cumulative of realized P/L and the current unrealized P/L from your position.

Realized P/L refers to the profit or loss you have made after closing your position for a specific period. Different from Unrealized P&L, this number excludes P&L from open positions.

Unrealized P/L refers to the current profit or loss on your position. This number shows the profit or loss you will realize or make if the position is realized with the price at that time..

P&L in Rupiah =  Sell Value – Buy Value.

Sell Value = Sold Quantity * Sell Price
Buy Value = Sold Quantity * Buy Price

P&L in % = P&L in Rupiah / Cost Value

EXAMPLE

On Monday..

You bought 2 BTC at Rp550.000.000

    • You then sold the 1 BTC at Rp580.000.000
    • The P/L of your portfolio
      • Realized P/L for this transaction
        • P/L in Rupiah: (1 * Rp580.000.000) – (1 * Rp550.000.000) = +Rp30.000.000
  • P/L in %: Rp30.000.000 / Rp550.000.000 = +5.45%
    • Unrealized P/L for remaining position
      • Current price of 1 BTC: Rp585.000.000
      • P/L in Rupiah: (1 * Rp585.000.000) – (1 * Rp550.000.000) = +Rp35.000.000
      • P/L in %: Rp35.000.000 / Rp550.000.000 = +6.36%
    • The total P/L of your portfolio
      • Total P/L in Rupiah: Total Realized P/L + Unrealized P/L
        = Rp30.000.000 + Rp35.000.000 = +Rp65.000.000
      • Total P/L in %: Rp10.000.000 / (2 * Rp550.000.000) = +5.91%
    • Summary:
      • You just made a profit of Rp30.000.000 (+5.45%) from selling 1 BTC
      • And you still have a position of 1 BTC, which if you sell at current price, you will make a profit of Rp35.000.000 (+6.36%)
      • The total P/L consisting of both realized position and open positions is  Rp65.000.000 (+5.91%)

On Tuesday (the following day)

You sold all the remaining BTC you have in your position.

    • You sold the 1 BTC at Rp530.000.000
    • The P/L of your portfolio
      • Realized P/L for this transaction
        • P/L in Rupiah: (1 * Rp580.000.000) – (1 * Rp550.000.000) = -Rp20.000.000
  • P/L in %: Rp30.000.000 / Rp550.000.000 = -3.63%
  • Unrealized P/L for remaining position
      • Since there is no remaining position, the Unrealized P/L is 0.
    • The total P/L of your portfolio
      • Total P/L in Rupiah: Total Realized P/L + Unrealized P/L
        = +Rp30.000.000 + -Rp20.000.000 = +Rp10.000.000
      • Total P/L in %: Rp10.000.000 / (2 * Rp550.000.000) = +0.91%
    • Summary:
      • You just made a loss of Rp20.000.000 (-3.63%) from selling 1 BTC
      • The total P/L of your portfolio is Rp10.000.000 (+0.91%)

What if I bought multiple assets at different prices?

When buying an asset with multiple transactions, the buy price will be averaged using a weighted-average method.

The formula of Average Buy Price =

Total Buy Value / Total Quantity Bought =

(Qty1 * Buy Price 1 + Qty2 * Buy Price 2 + Qty(n) * Buy Price (n)…) / (Qty1 + Qty2 + Qty(n)…)

Example

Date BTC
Quantity Buy Price (Rp) Buy Value (Rp)
1 Jan 0.1 500,000,000 50,000,000
2 Jan 0.3 520,000,000 156,000,000
3 Jan 0.4 515,000,000 206,000,000
4 Jan 0.3 530,000,000 159,000,000
Total Buy Value 571,000,000
Total Quantity 1.1
Averaged Buy Price 519,090,909

What if I get an asset or lose an asset not from buying or selling?

The increase of asset or decrease of asset can be caused by some transactions:

  1. Asset Increase
    1. Crypto Deposit
    2. Asset Reward
    3. Staking Return/Reward
    4. Receive Internal Crypto Transfer
    5. Receive Airdrop
  2. Asset Decrease
    1. Crypto Withdraw
    2. Send Internal Crypto Transfer

Whenever your asset balance increases because of Asset Reward, Staking Reward, and Airdrop, the portfolio will mark the transactions as P/L calculated with the price at that point of time, and the amount of asset will be considered as a buy transaction with price at that point of time. And reward will be marked as profit.

Whenever your asset balance increases or decreases because of Crypto Deposit, Receive Internal Crypto Transfer, Crypto Withdraw, Send Internal Crypto Transfer, your transaction will be calculated using the price at that point of time.

Example 1: Receive Airdrop

  • You just received 0.1 BTC from Airdrop
  • Portfolio will consider it as a buy transaction with a buy price equal to the market price at that point of time. In this case, the moment you receive airdrop, the BTC was priced at Rp550.000.000. So the portfolio position will increase by 0.1 BTC with buy price of Rp550.000.000.
  • Since the airdrop is considered a reward, the airdrop will also be considered as realized P/L of 0.1 BTC x Rp550.000.000 = +Rp55.000.000

Example 2:  Crypto Deposit

  • You just received 0.1 ETH from Crypto Deposit
  • Portfolio will consider it as a buy transaction with a buy price equal to the market price at that point of time. In this case, the moment you receive airdrop, the ETH was priced at Rp20.000.000. So the portfolio position will increase by 0.1 ETH with a buy price of Rp20.000.000.

Example 3: Crypto Withdraw

  • You just withdraw 20 ADA from your Reku wallet
  • The 20 ADA average price in your portfolio was at Rp4.000
  • Portfolio will consider it as a sell transaction with a sell price equal to the market price at that point of time. In this case, the moment you receive airdrop, the ADA was priced at Rp5.000. So the portfolio position will decrease by 0.1 ADA with a sell price of Rp20.000.000.
  • Then P/L will be realized in your portfolio:
    20 ADA * (Rp5.000 – Rp4.000) = +Rp20.000
